Problem

An underwater light intensity sensor was needed to gather subsurface incident light measurements for calibration of a satellite-borne ocean data gathering project.

Solution

We used a seven band intensity sensing radiometer manufactured by another company. We produced a urethane bonded installation of the radiometer to a deep-water flotation sphere. Inside the sphere was a microprocessor control, data logging and power control circuit designed and produced by Alpha Omega, and batteries.

Mass was distributed inside the sphere to keep the radiometer pointed upward. The sphere was enclosed in a plastic "hard hat" shell that attached to the mooring line.

Results

The units collected date and time stamped data that was used for comparison with satellite data to calibrate the satellite observations with ocean conditions.
